The UK has repeatedly refused to meet with Hardeep Johal, a British citizen who was arrested in India for allegedly killing Hindu leaders. His wife claims that police sat him in a sack over his head and forced him into a van. He claims that he was tortured into confessing. However, the Indian government denies this, and the UK has backed him in his legal case. Despite the UK’s refusal to meet with Mr Johal, the Foreign Office has had regular conversations with him, including attending relevant court hearings as an observer.

Mr Johal was educated in the United Kingdom and completed an AO Trauma Surgery Fellowship at the University of British Columbia. He is currently a Consultant Orthopedic and Trauma Surgeon at the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. He also consults at One Hatfield Hospital, Pinehill Hospital, and the BMI Chiltern & Shelburne Hospital in Buckinghamshire. He has a keen interest in teaching and he is Lead for Education in the orthopaedic department. He has taught medical students at the University of Cambridge and is a member of the International Foot and Ankle Committee.

During his postgraduate training, he completed an MSc in Sports Medicine at UCL. He then underwent higher surgical training at the University of London and was awarded a Travelling Fellowship by the British Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society.
