# How to Calculate Percentage?

Have you ever heard the term ‘percentage’? It is defined as a portion or a ratio that has a total value of 100. This word was derived from the Latin term ‘per centum,’ which basically means ‘by the hundred.’ If you received a score of 65 out of 100 on an exam, the percentage you received is equal to 65%. The ‘percentage formula’ is the formula used to determine the percentage of any given quantity. The unitary method and changing the denominator to 100 are two ways to calculate percentage of any quantity. We will need to solve some examples in order to better understand this concept.

## Formula to Calculate Percentage

The percentage equation is used to determine an amount or percentage in terms of 100. Percentage means “per hundred” in the most basic form. A number between 0 and one is expressed using the percentage formula. It’s a number that’s expressed as a percentage of 100. It is commonly denoted by the symbol percent and is used to compare and find ratios.

Percentage Formula = The given value / total value given * 100.

Examples

The formula for calculating the percentage of any quantity using the unitary method is given as given value/ total value * 100. Let’s work through some examples to gain a better understanding of the subject.

Question 1: It is stated that the total number of balls is 20, with the number of red balls being eight and the number of yellow balls being twelve. What is the percentage of yellow balls in relation to the total number of balls?

Solution: Let’s note down the information given in the question,

Total number of balls given is equal to 20

Number of red balls is equal to 8

Number of yellow balls is equal to 12

We already know the formula to calculate the percentage = given value/ total value * 100

The percentage of red balls is = 8/ 20*100 which equals 40%

Similarly, the percentage of yellow balls is = 12/20*100 equals 60 %

Therefore, the percentage of yellow balls with respect to the total number of given balls is = 60 percent.

Question 2: It is stated that the total number of students in a class is 50, with the number of girls being 20 and the rest being boys. What is the percentage of boys?

Solution: Let’s note down the information given in the question,

Total number of students in the class equals 50

Number of girls = 20

Number of boys = 50-20 = 30

We already know the formula to calculate the percentage = given value/ total value * 100

The percentage of boys in the class = 30/50*100 = 60%

Therefore, the percentage of boys with respect to the total number of given students in class is = 60 percent.
